Mission and Beliefs
The mission of Southern School of Engineering is to provide each student with the physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills needed to compete in a global society. Southern School of Engineering staff members are committed to the belief that students will achieve their maximum potential when they are part of a community of friends and teachers that encourage success and achievement.
Innovative Partnership
Southern School of Engineering is an innovative partnership with the New Schools Project of North Carolina with support from the NC General Assembly, the State Board of Education and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is our goal to expand the scope of high school innovation by developing and carrying out a strategic plan that ensures the competitiveness of our students in the global economy by accelerating student achievement in engineering and other related areas.
College Preparatory
Southern School of Engineering delivers a rigorous and relevant college preparatory program for all of our students. Every student at our school is placed on the College/University Course of Study and takes Honors and AP courses. We focus on project/problem-based learning with a collaboration of school work and real-world experiences. Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 12 hours of college credit before graduating from high school.
Small Size
The school opened in 2007-2008 with 100 students in the 9th grade. Enrollment continues to increase in each grade level. Southern School of Engineering is designed to substantially increase the number of underrepresented students who will pursue advanced studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. By creating an environment of collegiality, high expectations, experimentation, and trust, Southern School of Engineering will have a goal of 100% graduation rate with every student being college ready and better prepared for entry into high-skill careers.
